Red habanero peppers are a African and Caribbean favorite that are native to Mexico and South America. They are known for their intense heat and fruity flavor.
Habanero peppers are usually 1 to 2.5 inches long and start out green, then turn orange or red when fully ripe. They have a waxy, glossy skin and thin, crisp pale red flesh. The flesh contains a central cavity with round, cream-colored seeds.
Red habanero peppers are said to be many times hotter than standard habanero peppers, with a Scoville rating of 100,000 to 450,000 units, depending on growing conditions. They have a sweet, fruity flavor with an intense and pungent heat.
